Monticello March 16, 2023

My sister and brother-in-law were supposed to come visit for a long weekend, and one of the things we were going to do was visit Monticello down in Charlottesville. They weren't able to make it, but I'd already bought the tickets, so I went anyway.

20230416_143131.jpg In the dining room.

20230416_143242.jpg A dumbwaiter for wine.

20230416_143305.jpg The side doors.

20230416_143549.jpg Hidden door for servants/slaves to bring food.

20230416_144547.jpg A sitting room(?)

20230416_145135.jpg Supplies.

20230416_145143.jpg Another bedroom.

20230416_145916.jpg I think this was the boys' bedroom.

20230416_145948.jpg Inside the rotunda, on the top floor.

20230416_145958.jpg More of the room.

20230416_150049.jpg A little space that one of the kids used to hide in.

20230416_152715.jpg The kitchen.

20230416_152853.jpg Outside, facing Mulberry Row again.

20230416_153335.jpg Lotsa glare. I think this is one of the outbuildings connected by walkways/porches to the main building.

20230416_153552.jpg Jefferson's letter duplicator, which is how we have such a large record of his correspondence.

20230416_154702.jpg One of the gardens.

20230416_154752.jpg Grave of Rachel Phillips Levy. The Levys purchased the estate a few years after Jefferson's death and held it for decades until the foundation that currently owns and operates it was formed.

20230416_155529.jpg The obelisk marking his grave.
