Found this on one of the News-of-the-Wierd-type sites I read. The story isn't much, but the charge filed against the guy is what got me: "assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder". So, in Michigan, there's actually a separate crime between battery and attempted murder for just plain-ol' beating the shit out of somebody.
