Sorry for the lack of updates; life's been pleasantly boring the last few months. But today I need to complain, and anybody who still subscribes to the feed gets to follow along.
By way of setup, I bought a first-generation Droid a little while ago. I'm rather pleased with it so far, and am posting this entry on it. (More on why in a sec.) I've even gotten moderately OK at using the itty-bitty keyboards on the thing.
Fast forward a bit, and I'd been having an occasional problem with Firefox: Sometimes when I'd quit the program it would "zombify" and take up 99% of the CPU even though the UI had been torn down. It would usually do this overnight, so I'd occasionally hit the den in the morning to hear the MacBook Pro's fans cranking full-blast and a CPU sitting at about 195°F.
Well, last Friday it did it after I finished reading comics in the morning, meaning it was unattended from 7:00 AM to about 10:30 PM. This was apparently too long, and now my 3.5-year-old computer is a $2100 paperweight with an Apple logo on it.
So yeah, that sucked.
I went in to work Saturday and ordered a new HTPC from NewEgg. Windows PC, since I ain't made of money. All the guts, minus the wifi card, were delivered Wednesday. $600 of electronics on my porch but I'm OK with that -- I'm kinda out-of-the-way here. I pick up the box and see a "we couldn't deliver" sticker.
For the $40 case.
